Another mistake in the last standing stage deprived Germany's top biathlete Benedikt Doll of a chance for an Olympic medal at the Winter Games in China.

In the sprint over ten kilometers, the Black Forester finished eighth in Zhangjiakou after coming sixth in the individual.

Silver would have been possible without a missed shot at the decisive moment on Saturday.

Doll was 26.1 seconds behind Bronze, which is roughly how long it takes to complete a penalty loop.

Norway's Johannes Thingnes Bö won after ten kilometers despite a penalty in 24:00.4 minutes and took his second gold in China after winning the mixed relay.

Individual Olympic champion Quentin Fillon Maillet of France took silver, 25.5 seconds behind.

Bronze went to Bo's brother Tarjei, 38.9 seconds back.

Four years ago in Pyeongchang, Arnd Peiffer, who has since retired, ensured a German Olympic triumph in the sprint.

“To be honest, the goal was to shoot clean, but the competition was tough.

This one mistake standing was very annoying," said Doll on ZDF.

“The first shot was quite quick, quite reckless.

This is a pity.

The placement is already very good.” Doll was 1:00.5 minutes behind Bö at the finish line and was about a minute slower than Norway's star, who didn't give the competition on the cross-country trail a shred of a chance.

"Keep calm, shoot well"

He is also the favorite in the pursuit race of the top 60 this Sunday (11.45 a.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Olympics, in ARD and on Eurosport).

The distances from the sprint are taken there.

"For the pursuer that means: keep calm, shoot well and if it works well, the medal is definitely within reach," said Doll.

Roman Rees shot clean, but was 1:23.9 minutes slower than Bö and finished 17th. Philipp Nawrath in 22nd and Johannes Kühn in 33rd were without a chance with three and four penalties respectively.

Nawrath, who started early as the first of the German quartet, was already behind in his first Olympic individual race after a missed shot in prone position and then even missed the target twice while standing.

Rees did much better with zero penalties, but after finishing seventh in the individual, he didn't have the pace on the track for another top result.

Kühn missed twice while prone and immediately fell far behind, in the end there were even four penalties.

Johannes Thingnes Bö immediately delivered one of his rapid-fire interludes, Fillon Maillet missed a disc immediately afterwards and was no longer able to compensate for it with his running ability on the sprint distance that was half as long.

Bö had a standing penalty after a mistake, but stayed in front and was then able to celebrate with his brother Tarjei.

Doll, on the other hand, had to watch how others got the medals.
