Gao Tingyu was born on December 15, 1997 in Yichun City, Heilongjiang Province.
He started his skating career because of a pair of roller skates.
"When I first learned to skate, Tingyu didn't even have roller skates. But a child in our neighbor had roller skates, so they played together all the time," Gao Tingyu's mother recalled.
Gao Tingyu, who has grown up, has shown talents different from his peers in terms of hand and foot coordination, body balance, and endurance.
However, Gao Tingyu's parents did not want him to engage in professional sports training due to concerns about his child's injury during sports.
Skating caused Gao Tingyu to have a disagreement with his parents for the first time.

Facing the sports he loves, Gao Tingyu did not choose to give up.
The school had skating lessons, and he was afraid that his parents would disagree, so he signed up secretly.
"The first time I skated when I was a child, I fell in love with the feeling of being free on the ice. It was very magical and very enjoyable." Gao Tingyu recalled this many years later.
In 2008, he was discovered by the enlightenment coach Liu Deguang and brought to Mudanjiang for professional training.
Since then, Gao Tingyu has started his skating journey.
From the age of 10, he began to live a collective life at school.
While other children are still adjusting to the environment, Gao Tingyu has begun to insist on completing ice and physical training every day.
In 2011, Gao Tingyu was selected to the Heilongjiang provincial speed skating team.
His dream began to take root.

Five years after entering the provincial team, Gao Tingyu was selected into the national team with his outstanding results, thus taking a key step in his career.
2016
In October, in the men's 500-meter race at the National Speed Skating Championships, Gao Tingyu slid 34.56 seconds, breaking the national youth record.
2017
In February, in the men's 500-meter speed skating competition at the Asian Winter Games in Sapporo, Gao Tingyu won the gold medal with a time of 34.69 seconds, breaking the Asian record.
In December, in the men's 500-meter race at the US Station of the Speed Skating World Cup, Gao Tingyu set a new personal best with a time of 34.34 seconds and set a new national record.

In September, in the China Cup Speed Skating Elite League, Gao Tingyu broke the national speed skating men's 500m record held by him with a time of 33.83 seconds.
