American biathlete Leif Nordgren witnessed the birth of his first child via video call.

"It was really cool," said the 32-year-old, who is involved in the Beijing Olympics. "It was really nice to be able to video chat with my wife pretty much all the time.

A truly special day for our family.”

Nordgren finished 87th in the individual 20K with seven penalty minutes on Tuesday, a day after his daughter was born.

"I can't get over how cute this girl is and can't wait to get home and meet her," Nordgren wrote on Instagram. "Caitlin we did well."

His wife Caitlin Nordgren works as a meteorologist for the TV network NBC.

Months ago, the couple realized that the due date was "not good timing," she said.

Leif Nordgren can't wait to get the Winter Games over and come home.

It's "really exciting" to have something "that big" to come home to, he said.

The German Benedikt Doll had just missed out on a medal after Denise Herrmann's sensational Olympic victory.

Up to the last standing stage, the 31-year-old was on course for a medal in the individual over 20 km, national coach Mark Kirchner was tensely involved at the shooting range in Zhangjiakou - but Doll's second penalty shattered all dreams.

In sixth place, the former sprint world champion from the Black Forest was 36 seconds off the podium.

"I don't really know whether I should cry or be happy now," said Doll on ARD, but he was more concerned with his first mistake in the prone position: "Of course it was a good race, but you can tell from the placement buy very little."
