After less than eight months, the second division football club Fortuna Düsseldorf ended its collaboration with coach Christian Preusser and quickly found a successor.

The former Hamburg and Osnabrück coach Daniel Thioune should take over the team immediately.

The club confirmed this on Tuesday after several media had reported about it the night before.

Preußer could not meet expectations with just five wins from 21 games and ended up with his team in a relegation battle.

The 38-year-old was committed to the club until June 30, 2023.

The contract of his predecessor Uwe Rösler was not extended after fifth place in the previous season.

"The situation in the table and the fact that we haven't scored a point or scored in the last four second division games have forced us to act.

After intensive discussions, we came to the conclusion that a new impetus is the best solution to achieve positive results again," said Fortuna's sporting director Klaus Allofs.

Thioune, who was released after ten months at Hamburger SV last season, will receive a contract with the Rheinländer until June 30, 2023. The 47-year-old had previously worked for VfL Osnabrück for a long time and led the club to the second division .

"The team has enough potential to break out of the bottom of the table.

Bringing this potential onto the pitch is now the task.

I'm sure that together with my coaching team and the entire staff, we will succeed," said Thioune.
