Suddenly a voice speaks from the computer.

"Hello," says Eric Frenzel.

You can only hear him, not see him.

In his room in the quarantine hotel, the Internet connection is not good enough to join the video conversation that the German Ski Association organized on Tuesday afternoon.

"My health is very good - as far as I can tell," says Frenzel, 33 years old, Nordic combined athlete, corona positive.

In Sochi 2014 and Pyeongchang 2018 he won gold for Germany.

In Beijing, at what will probably be his last Olympic Games, there should still be a medal.

Now, five days and several positive tests after arriving in China, he is still stuck in the hotel.

The most he can do is watch the first competition in Nordic Combined this Wednesday.

"I hope that it will be broadcast," says Frenzel.

In his room he only receives Chinese television.

Four hours later.

Ski jump in Zhangjiakou.

You can't hear Eric Frenzel here, but you can see him.

At least his name is on the big screen where the latest jump training results are displayed.

After that three letters: DNS.

Didn't start.

Didn't show up.

This is also behind the name of the Norwegian Jarl Magnus Riiber.

He, the world champion, the Olympic favorite, is in China but has to sit out on Wednesday.

Sure Corona.

The day before the first medal decision in Nordic Combined is a particularly good time to see how the virus and the measures the organizers are enforcing in China are changing the Olympics.

You just have to keep changing your perspective.

From the computer with Eric Frenzel's voice to the ski jump in Zhangjiakou and back again.

At least ergometer and dumbbells

A new voice suddenly speaks from the computer.

It does not belong to a human, but to a machine.

In German she says: "Hello, your lunch." You can hear Eric Frenzel moving.

The food service is here.

What's up?

"I haven't looked in yet," Frenzel says as he speaks back into the microphone.

But he likes the food.

Frenzel is happy with his new room anyway.

And with the old one?

When he put his three bags in it, there was no more space.

"I could take two steps, then I was in the bathroom, one step, then I was at the dining table, one step, then I was in bed." The wallpaper was also peeling off the wall.

And it wasn't clean either.

With the help of his bandage he was able to move.

Now he has three to four times as much space - and an ergometer and dumbbells.

Back to the ski jump in Zhangjiakou.

Only one German jumps in training on Tuesday: Manuel Faißt, who was flown in after the Corona cases of Eric Frenzel and Terence Weber.

However, he was not nominated for the first competition.

The problem: once he joins in, he can no longer be replaced.

Then either Frenzel or Weber would no longer be eligible.

That's why only three Germans start this Wednesday.

Among them Vinzenz Geiger, third in the overall World Cup.

As Frenzel's and Weber's contact person, he was given his own rules during the preparation.

He has to take another bus.

And was not allowed to use the lift during jump training.

Once, as national coach Hermann Weinbuch told the German Press Agency,

he was only five minutes before his jump at the top of the hill.

"You can't work with him at all.

And that's how he jumped.

That was very, very difficult for him.”

Eric Frenzel speaks from the computer and tells what was difficult for him.

The positive test, the quarantine hotel, the first room, the first evening.

"That was the hardest thing for me." His family, friends and fans encouraged him with their messages.

He hopes that he can still start and show his performance.

Before that, however, he has another "greatest desire": finally "to be able to go outside".
