The world record - 12.32.95 - in the 10,000 meters was broken by van der Poel during the World Cup in Heerenveen.

The track in the Netherlands is at a low altitude and during the competition there was high pressure.

In the skating world, people often talk about wanting higher altitudes and low pressures - for less air resistance - to optimize the opportunities to break world records.

- I broke that record after 1.5 years of training.

If you were to just take that race and do it on a highland course, we would talk 12.25 if not better.

In the form I have been in this season ... Maybe 12.20 on a highland course.

Nils van der Poel said during a press conference last week that he is not betting on breaking the world record during the Olympics.

Support from the legend

The skating school legend and Viaplay's skating commentator Tomas Gustafson believes that there seems to be no limit to van der Poel.

- Nils as an athlete is phenomenal.

It will be exciting to see if there is further development.

It feels like there is a much greater potential.

We do not know what the ice in China is good for, but we know what Nils is good for.
