It was in December 2020 that Nicole Schmidhofer lost control and crashed into the safety net, at 115 kilometers per hour.

With both anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments in the left knee, it was feared that the career was over for the then 31-year-old Austrian.

But Schmidhofer was hopeful and aimed to be back within a year.

And a month ago, she was standing at the starting gate in Lake Louise.

But it will not be more than that for Schmidhofer this season, who now announces that the season is over.

- I have thought about the situation with my coaches and the whole team, and we have come to the conclusion that I will cancel this season now.

That is because of the muscle problems of recent weeks, she says.

- If I get a real break, I can build up properly for next year.

That is the goal.
