The world setter was in search of the record for the most grand slam titles on the men's side in the Australian Open.

But since the Serb was expelled, the way is left open for Rafael Nadal to take his 21st title and thus become historic.

The next chance to break the record for Djokovic is the French championship in May.

But according to information to the news agency AFP, the French government will introduce requirements for vaccination certificates for athletes who want to compete in the country.

French Sports Minister Roxana Maracineanu said on Monday that athletes from other countries will not be exempted from the new covid rules, thus withdrawing her previous statement in which she said visiting athletes could be allowed if it was in a bubble.

The new rules mean that everyone over the age of 16 must be vaccinated in order to visit public places such as sports arenas, bars and restaurants.

Djokovic would therefore not be able to participate in the grand slam tournament if he does not get vaccinated or get an exemption.
