Barcelona defender Umtiti has surgery after a broken leg

Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti will undergo surgery on Tuesday after he fractured his foot while training, the Catalan club announced.

Barcelona said in a statement: "Umtiti will undergo surgery on Tuesday," noting that determining the length of his absence with more accuracy will be clear after the end of the operation.

He continued, "Samuel Umtiti suffered a blow during today's training session to his right foot, which caused a fracture of the fifth metatarsal base of the foot."

The injury reduces the chances of Umtiti leaving the Camp Nou in the winter transfer window this month, as Barcelona seeks to reduce its huge debts by selling many of its players.

The role of the French center of defense, who joined the Catalan giant in the summer of 2016, has recently declined, unlike past seasons, where his role was avant-garde.

Umtiti's level was affected by a series of knee injuries, as the 28-year-old, crowned world champion with the "Rooster" team in 2018, participated once as a starter in "La Liga" this season.

Barcelona revealed earlier this month that Umtiti had signed a new four-year contract, as the deal between the two parties distributed his salary over a longer period, which allowed the Spanish club to obtain financial space and register its new striker Ferran Torres from Manchester City, the English Premier League champion.
