Austrian Vincent Kriechmayr tested positive for covid-19 and was in quarantine until Wednesday.

He therefore missed the training run before this weekend's downhill race, in which you have to drive to start in the competition.

But the 30-year-old appealed to the competition committee for mercy - and was finally granted a waiver to drive on Saturday.

"Is fantastic"

The decision to let Kriechmayr - who won World Cup gold in the downhill race in 2021 - circumvent the rules aroused obvious feelings among the audience in Switzerland who booed during his race.

But despite that and the difficult preparations, Kriechmayr went and won the race.

- That he performs so well is fantastic, says SVT expert Tobias Hellman.

Criticizes the decision

He also draws a parallel to the outspoken tennis star Novak Djokovic who risks being deported from Australia after traveling there without a valid visa.

- It was not good for Djokovic's image and I probably do not think that Kriechmayr has made the right decision to drive either, Hellman says.
