Paris Saint-Germain overcame a shaky start to move back 11 points at the top of the French Ligue 1 after goals from Kylian Mbappe and Thilo Keirer gave them a 2-0 victory over "Brest" on Saturday.

Mbappe and Keirer scored a goal in each half, to raise the capital's team to 50 points from 21 games, one day after the victory of second-placed Nice 2-1 over Nantes.

With this result, Brest remained in 13th place and has 25 points.

Third-placed Olympique de Marseille on 39 points will be level with Nice if they defeat defending champion Lille at the Velodrome on Sunday.

Racing Lens occupies fourth place with 33 points, after Sekou Fofana's stoppage-time goal led them to a 2-1 victory at bottom of the standings Saint-Etienne earlier on Saturday.

And at the Parc des Princes, Paris Saint-Germain missed Lionel Messi, who is still recovering from his infection with Covid-19, and he had to live with the absence of goalkeeper Keylor Navas at the last moments, after he was also infected with the Corona virus.

Paris Saint-Germain won its previous eight league matches against Brest, but the visiting team started strong and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma intervened in a superb way to prevent Ervin Cardona from scoring early.

Brest, who was seeking his first win in the first division since 1985 against Paris Saint-Germain, hit 3 balls on goal in the first 20 minutes.

But it was Mbappe who opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a low shot from 16 metres, scoring his tenth goal in the league this season after Paris Saint-Germain increased its pressure.

Marco Verratti came close to doubling the score after 3 minutes of the second half, but his shot hit the post.

German international Keirer finally doubled the lead in the 53rd minute when he put the ball into the net after a pass from Nuno Mendes.

Keirer and Mbappe, who were booked after an argument with Hugo Magnetti in the first half, had other chances, but Mauricio Pochettino's side had already easily sealed their victory.
