After being infected with the corona virus before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations, Gabon's captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has to sit out for the time being.

During examinations of the former Dortmund Bundesliga professional, a "lesion" in the heart was found, the Gabon Football Association announced on Facebook on Friday.

A more precise diagnosis was not initially available.

The 32-year-old Arsenal striker missed the 1-1 draw against Ghana in the evening. The medical department of the African continental association did not want to take any risks, the Gabon association said. Aubameyang's teammates Axel Meyé and Mario Lemina had to pass for the same reason. Gabon had won 1-0 against the Comoros at the start. Any player who was previously infected with Corona at the tournament must complete a medical examination before returning. The Africa Cup of Nations takes place in Cameroon until February 6th.

A problem that you also know at FC Bayern Munich.

There Julian Nagelsmann has to do without Alphonso Davies, who was diagnosed with heart muscle inflammation.

After the end of the domestic isolation, the 21-year-old Bayern professional was examined - and then after returning to training was sent on a compulsory break of several weeks.

“Of course there is a probability these days that it comes from a corona infection plus sporting activity.

But we don't know 100 percent," said Nagelsmann.

"But it also has no relevance to the further course of action with him.

In fact, he's got it – it's modest to shitty to utterly shitty.”

"Now it's about Corona again"

Corona won't let go of FC Bayern Munich either. After the bad start to the football year in the 1-2 draw against Borussia Mönchengladbach, when Nagelsmann was missing a total of 13 professionals, including nine players around captain Manuel Neuer who had recently tested positive, the next longer absence follows. Last year, the unvaccinated Joshua Kimmich, like Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, had to pause for weeks due to quarantine, infection and lung problems, now it is the young Canadian Davies.

In addition to Neuer and Corentin Tolisso, who were probably in the starting XI, Dayot Upamecano, Omar Richards, Leroy Sané and Tanguy Nianzou are back in the squad as change options on Saturday (3:30 p.m. in the FAZ live ticker for the Bundesliga and on Sky) against 1. FC Köln could be of no real comfort to Davies given the diagnosis. Although Nagelsmann emphasized that these were signs of mild heart muscle inflammation and that it was "not that dramatic". Nevertheless, it hits the left-back, who is missing "indefinitely", and the club hard.

"I actually thought that we could bury the Corona issue at some point before Christmas and that it wouldn't always be about Corona.

Now it's a lot about Corona again, ”said Nagelsmann before the away game.

"Phonzie is out of training for the time being and will not be available for the next few weeks either.

It has to heal completely now.”

Whether soccer players, track and field athletes or ice hockey players: More and more athletes are reporting respiratory or heart problems after the corona infection.

The consequences of the disease continue to accompany the athletes - not always as prominently accompanied as with Alphonso Davies or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
