Taxi vs.
VTC The war is not over
Madrid Municipal ordinance to 'standardize' taxi drivers
The professors of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Navarra Raúl Bajo and Miguel Ángel Borrella have studied
the expansion in Spain of the most ecological cars
. They sought, above all, to detect if the massive landing in Spanish cities of vehicle platforms with a driver, the so-called VTCs, had prompted
the traditional taxi union to buy cleaner vehicles
than those that had been in service until then.
One of the
debates within the
European Green Deal
of the European Union was about whether
competition policies were the most appropriate
to achieve environmental objectives. In the mobility landscape, the authors of the study have concluded that the VTCs have forced the ecological update of the taxi fleet of always.
Exactly, the interest of these professionals in the renewal of their vehicles in 'green' terms has increased by 30%
.
The study covered
44 Spanish metropolitan areas
with more than 100,000 inhabitants. The results are homogeneous, especially in the comparison between
Madrid and Valencia, which together with Barcelona have a Low Emission Zone
. In Barcelona the situation was slightly different, but not essentially, due to the temporary withdrawal of the Uber company.
The three cities were independently analyzed for the various regulations that have affected the activity and consumption of VTC services
.
“
If a company does not have competition, generally it does not worry so much about saving.
In the case of the taxi, the optimal thing for the driver would be to have a green vehicle, but if there is no external threat from competition, he does not consider it ”, reasons Professor Bajo.
A conclusion based on data from his research: the
analysis between December 2014 and February 2020 of more than 46,000 purchases by taxi drivers, more than 60,000 second-hand sales and 50,000 unsubscribe operations
.
Without VTC you don't change
"With the presence of these platforms we observe an increase in the distribution of ecological vehicles among taxi drivers, while the purchase of dirty cars decreases," says Bajo, who also belongs to the Institute of Culture and Society of the university itself.
The opposite effect is observed in those cities in which the entry of these companies was very unlikely.
"Our study has shown that,
given the correct incentives, greater competition favors investment in those energies or clean technologies
that respect the environment to save costs and be more efficient," concludes the researcher Raúl Bajo.
There is still a long way to go. A look at the latest statistics show that
non-rental companies bought a total of 327,300 vehicles
of all technologies in all of 2021, just 2.1% more than in the disastrous year 2020.
Spain is among the European countries with a slower evolution in terms of electrification, despite the fact that 2021 can be classified as a somewhat hopeful year.
Of every 100 cars or SUVs registered in Spain in 2021, 35 had alternative drives:
hybrids, plug-in hybrids, pure electric and with extended autonomy, gas (compressed natural, liquefied natural gas or oil) or hydrogen.
Non-plug-in hybrids (ECO label) command
, with 21.54% of market share in 2021 (223,383 units), while pure electric (CERO label) represent 2.68% of share with 27,769 registrations in all last year (37.76% more than in 2020). The
43,310 plug-in hybrids
(ZERO label) represent a
4.18%
share of the total passenger car market.
The share of gas vehicles was 1.78%.
