By dispatching Kazakhe Elena Rybakina to the final of the WTA tournament in Adelaide in just 64 minutes on Sunday, world number 1 Ashleigh Barty sent a strong signal to her future opponents at the Australian Open, which begins in a week and whose she is clearly the favorite.
At home, the 25-year-old Australian defeated No. 7 seed Rybakina 6-3 6-2 to win the 14th career title.
Barty, who interrupted her last season in September, has shown throughout the week a dazzling form for her tournament of recovery, by eliminating in turn Coco Gauff (22nd player in the world), Sofia Kenin (12th) and Iga Swiatek (9th).
Favorite at home
Facing Rybakina, the Australian played with her wide range of shots, including her sliced backhand, taking advantage of the many unforced errors (26) of the Kazakhe.
Former winner of Roland-Garros (2019) and Wimbledon last year, the Australian now dreams of winning “her” Grand Slam at home in Melbourne.
But before that, she will continue her preparation next week for the Sydney Classic, a tournament in which she is also involved and where she could possibly find Rybakina in the quarterfinals.
