• US CES in Las Vegas 2022: ode to the electric car

  • Test We got on the NT1100 with which Honda shakes up the 'touring' segment

Mercedes-Benz has caused a sensation with the presentation at CES in Las Vegas of a prototype of a 100% electric saloon, the Vision EQXX, which announces with great fanfare 1,000 kilometers of autonomy;

998 km to be exact.

But during the digital presentation of the event, given the high rate of infections due to omicron, one of the key phrases was

"efficiency is the new currency"

, said by Markus Schäfer, head of Technology and Development (CTO) of Mercedes- Benz and member of the board of directors.

Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX unveiled at CES in Las Vegas 2022

Here is one of the keys to this

Vision EQXX

that anticipates future Mercedes electric models.

Energy

consumption "will be in one digit only", that is, it will be below 10 kWh for every 100 kilometers

traveled.

If compared with combustion models it would be equivalent to 1 liter / 100 km.

Almost two decades ago, with Ferdinand Piech at the command of the Volkswagen group, when in 2002 he devised a project that resulted in the

VW XL1

, whose third development could be driven in 2013 and which became known as "the car that used a liter

[homologated 0.9 liters per 100 km

] ".

And a liter of diesel for more inri.

The funny thing is that if we look at the silhouettes of both vehicles designed a decade apart, there are great similarities because the common maxim was efficiency, with the key help of aerodynamics.

The electric, more efficient

However, despite that similar aesthetic, 10 years is a long time in terms of technological leap.

And in terms of efficiency, Mercedes claims that

the Vision EQXX only has a 5% energy loss when it comes to wasting energy

.

In their own combustion cars,

the energy efficiency after the combustion of fossil fuel does not exceed 30%

, with which 70% of energy is lost.

Here, the electric vehicle beats the combustion vehicle by a landslide in tank-to-wheel efficiency.

Because actually the aerodynamics achieved by both vehicles is not very different, 0.17 of Cx coefficient for the Mercedes Vision EQXX and 0.16 for that Volkswagen XL1 prototype; the technology is completely different.

If the EQXX is a 100% electric car, the XL1 was a hybrid

powered by a two-cylinder 800cc turbo diesel engine with 48 horsepower and another 27 horsepower electric.

Weight reduction is key and the XL1

was a carbon fiber prodigy

weighing 795 kilos

, completely lightened of all the non-vital.

The Vision EQXX more than doubles that figure leaving the scale below 1,750 kilos,

because the Mercedes prototype includes equipment such as converting the dashboard into a screen that goes from side to side of the cabin.

In this sense, another of the key elements is the new battery that the EQXX introduces, which according to Mercedes-Benz is that "the

battery

can store almost the same energy as the EQS [the large, 100% electric saloon equivalent to the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. combustion] but being

50% smaller and 30% lighter

". A battery that has more than 900 volts, which will allow you to lower recharge times for a battery that has a useful capacity of less than 100 kWh. The capacity of the Mercedes-Benz EQS is 108 kWh.

However ,

the Mercedes EQS 450+ certifies a consumption of 16.7 kWh / 100 km in the WLTP cycle

.

The

Tesla Model

3

, the best-selling electric car in Spain in 2021,

certifies 14.9 kWh / 100 km

in its rear-wheel drive version and standard battery.

So if the Vision EQXX goes below 10 kWh / 100 km it would be a great advance to eliminate the tyranny of the plug at a stroke.

Goodbye to animal skin

In this race for efficiency where it is all about "going more miles with the least energy possible", the fight for weight reduction has no end.

However, now it is joined by the component of the circular economy to safeguard the planet.

Thus, car brands

eliminate seats made of animal skin

, replacing them with synthetic or vegetable-derived fabrics.

Of course, all this technology in new materials and development is not cheap.

It remains to be known the

price

of the first Mercedes serial model based on the EQXX that will arrive in 2024 or 2025. Because its brother, the current EQS in Spain costs between 117,000 and 145,000 euros, a very elitist figure.
