Here is a Christmas present that we would have done well.

In reaction to the virulence of the Omicron wave which affects the whole country, the government announced, Monday evening, the return of the gauges for large gatherings, sport included.

Thus, from Monday and for three weeks, indoor events will be limited to 2,000 spectators and outdoor events to 5,000, regardless of the maximum capacity of the stadiums.

The consumption of food and drink will also be prohibited.

"These are restrictive measures but they were anticipated", reacted the general manager of the National Basketball League (LNB) Michel Mimran.

“We are hopeful that the situation will improve and that these measures will only apply for three weeks.

This return to restrictions comes at a time when basketball, but also handball, volleyball, rugby and even football clubs have not yet recovered, financially, from the deep crisis caused by the interruptions of their competitions, at the height of the the first wave of Covid-19, then behind closed doors and spectator gauges.

In rugby, a cumbersome schedule

Sunday, the rugby clash between Stade Toulouse and Stade Français was postponed due to Covid contamination among Parisian players.

Four of the seven matches scheduled for Boxing Day have been postponed.

The situation weighs on the calendar of French clubs, most of which must already catch up with matches in European competitions postponed last weekend.

In football, the Coupe de France in danger?

In football, Ligue 1 is on hiatus, but most clubs resume training on December 28 or 29 with a view to the 16th Coupe de France from January 2 to 4.

The return of the holidays could lead to a wave of positive cases and the withdrawal of some teams.

What would the French Football Federation decide if a high number of matches could not be played?

In these exceptional conditions, could we consider a postponement of all the 16th when the already busy schedule of clubs offers few possibilities?

The example of English football, whose Boxing Day was cut this weekend by three matches and which is starting to be deeply disturbed again by the Covid, can make you fear the worst.

In the hand, the fear of the cluster among the Blues

Other sports are not spared by the resurgence of the pandemic.

The French handball team, since Sunday in preparation for Euro-2022 (January 13-30), is hit hard by the explosion of infections.

After Nikola Karabatic, Benoît Kounkoud and Yanis Lenne, initially summoned but positive for the coronavirus, the Federation (FFHB) announced the contaminations of five new players on Sunday, including the Olympic champion Hugo Descat.

The placement in isolation of the players on their arrival, while awaiting the result of a second test, "made it possible to avoid a first small disaster", judged the doctor of the Blues, Dr. Pierre Sébastien by videoconference Monday.

Coach Guillaume Gille currently has only thirteen able-bodied players available.

The situation has also deteriorated on the volleyball courts.

Two matches have been postponed, those of Montpellier scheduled against Paris on December 17 and Tourcoing next Wednesday.

Basketball at a standstill

On the basketball courts, after the French championship matches at Nanterre, already postponed for health reasons for the past three days, the situation has become tense.

The Boulogne-Levallois leader, "following positive cases in the workforce," saw his Monday night meeting against Le Portel postponed.

Asvel Lyon-Villeurbanne, hit by cases of Covid-19, for its part unsuccessfully asked the National Basketball League to postpone its meeting scheduled for Monday evening against Limoges.
