Sad Christmas for international cycling.

Dutch champion Amy Pieters underwent surgery for head injuries and plunged into a man-made coma after an accident on Thursday, her team Team SD Worx said on Friday.

“Amy Pieters underwent surgery yesterday [Thursday] on the head.

During the operation, the doctors eased the pressure caused by the accident.

She will be in an artificial coma for the next few days, ”SD Worx said on Twitter.

"When the doctors wake her up in a few days, it will then be possible to make a diagnosis on possible sequelae", added the team, specifying that her family had joined her at the hospital in Alicante (Spain) where it was transported after the accident.

Three-time world champion on the track

This took place during team training near Calpe, a coastal town north of Alicante, and following a clash between team members.

Amy Pieters, 30, is an endurance track specialist.

She was notably the three-time American racing world champion (2019, 2020, 2021) with her compatriot Kirsten Wild and European road champion in 2019.
