Amago Pinnick, the president of the Nigeria Football Association, revealed that negotiations are underway with Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho to take over the coaching of Nigeria before the African Nations Cup scheduled for next January in Cameroon.
And the former coach of Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham moved to coach Roma last summer, but it is clear that the team will not compete for titles, as Mourinho used to in all the teams he coached, except for Tottenham.
Nigeria is looking for a new coach after the dismissal of Gernot Rohr, who coached the Eagles for 5 years, but was sacked after a disappointing draw with the submerged Cape Verde national team.
The NFA president said they would appoint a new coach in the next week or two, and seemed to indicate that he had entered into negotiations with Mourinho, by emphasizing that the federation's focus was on the new coach's ability to impose discipline on the team.
He added that they want the new coach to be hungry for titles, because if he wants to win, he will instill discipline in the players.
The president of the federation stated that he had spoken with 3 senior coaches, including Jose Peseiro, whose name was in circulation, as well as Mourinho.
"I won't tell you that we didn't talk to Mourinho because we did, and the (sports) minister also spoke with Mourinho. If the coach gives us the Nations Cup, he will be hired immediately," Bennick said.
He added that the Portuguese coach told him about things in the Nigerian team that he did not know personally, saying that talking to him was very wonderful, and he told me about the strengths of each player in his country.
He stressed that the matter is now in the hands of the Executive Committee of the Federation, which will determine the best coach for Nigeria next week.
