"The patient's condition is stable and he will continue to be treated for the intestinal tumor that was discovered in September," reads a statement from the hospital.

"As I promised, I will celebrate Christmas with my family.

I'm going home.

Thank you for all your kind messages ", Pelé greets in a message on Instagram, to a picture where he smiles.

81-year-old Pelé was admitted to hospital for treatment of the intestinal tumor earlier in December.

The hospital then stated that Pelé's condition was stable and that he was expected to be discharged within a few days.

In September, Pelé had surgery to remove a tumor on the right part of his colon, and was hospitalized for almost a month in connection with it.

Pelé is considered by many to be the greatest football player of all time, and took, among other things, World Cup gold in 1958, 1962 and 1970.
