Current regulations allow a maximum thickness of between 20 and 25 millimeters depending on the branch, and when it comes to road running, it can be up to 40 millimeters.

According to the International Athletics Federation, the reason why the start date for the new rules is set so far in the future, simply because the shoe manufacturers have made "significant investments" in new shoes with 20-25 millimeter thick soles.

The development on the shoe front has been a hot potato in recent times, since several world records were broken by competitors with new shoes.

"When someone does a great job now, everyone will question whether it's because of the shoe, and it becomes a credibility problem," Norwegian star Karsten Warholm - Olympic gold medalist and world record holder in the 400 meter hurdles - told Reuters this summer.
