Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero announced today, Wednesday, the end of his playing career due to a heart problem, at the age of 33.

The news, which was expected due to the deteriorating health of the Argentine international, came in a press conference held today at the "Camp Nou" stadium, in the presence of Barcelona President Juan Laporta and the team's players.

Fighting tears, Aguero said, "My health comes first. The medical team told me that it was better for me to stop playing, and for this I leave Barca and retire from football."

"I leave with my head held high and happy. I don't know what awaits me in the coming years, I have many people who love me and wish me the best."

Aguero, who starred at first with Atletico Madrid before making a brilliant career with Manchester City, suffered from chest pains during Barcelona's match against Deportivo Alaves on October 30, and the club announced at that time that he had a heart rhythm problem.

Serge Barjuan, who was Barcelona's interim coach at the time, said Aguero had told him he was "a little dizzy".

After further examinations, it was decided that Aguero would be out of action for 3 months in order to undergo "diagnosis and treatment".

However, after consulting with specialists, Aguero was told that continuing to play would be too risky.

The Argentine national team striker - who scored 426 goals and assisted 118 other goals in 786 games he played in his career - joined Barcelona on a free transfer from Manchester City last July, but a calf injury delayed his start with the team. Catalan until October.
