Steven Gerrard's return to Anfield as coach of Aston Villa ended with a 1-0 defeat at Liverpool thanks to a penalty kick from Mohamed Salah in the 67th minute, to keep the Merseyside team behind by one point behind Manchester City, the leaders of the English Premier League, today, Saturday.

Despite the emotional return of the former Liverpool captain, he seemed to have prepared his team to at least snatch a draw from his childhood team.

Liverpool dominated the first half, and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved two chances from Andy Robertson and Salah.

Martinez parried a superb header from Virgil van Dijk at the start of the second half.

Liverpool's pressure paid off when Salah was awarded a penalty after an intervention from Tyrone Mings.

The Egyptian striker hit a low ball that goalkeeper Martinez could not stop, to give Jurgen Klopp's team the victory and chase after leaders Manchester City.

Chelsea beat Leeds with a late penalty

Chelsea got back on the right track to fight for the Premier League title when they snatched a thrilling 3-2 win at home to Leeds United on Saturday, after Jorginho's second penalty kick in stoppage time.

Chelsea raised its score to 36 points in third place, two points behind leaders Manchester City, who defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0, and one point from Liverpool, who won 1-0 against Aston Villa.

Leeds advanced against the course of the game in the 28th minute when Daniel James got a penalty kick after an intervention from Marcos Alonso, which was successfully executed by Brazilian Rafinha.

Chelsea, who lost to West Ham United last week, seemed to be dumbfounded, with the possibility of them drifting further away from City.

But the European champions equalized, as Alonso snatched a ball from Stewart Dallas and exchanged passes with Timo Werner and sent a cross pass that Mason Mount netted.

Coach Thomas Tuchel's team turned the match when he got a penalty after the video assistant referee intervened after Rafinha's foul on Antonio Rudiger, and Jorginho hit the ball in the goal.

Leeds stunned their hosts 7 minutes from time, as Tyler Roberts sent a pass to substitute 19-year-old Joe Gilhart to score his first league goal.

But at a time when it seemed that Chelsea would move away from the title race, Rudiger got a penalty after an interference from Matteos Kleich and Jorginho put the ball in the goal.
