Without Marco Rose, Borussia Dortmund slipped in the small Revier derby.

The second in the table reached 1-1 (0: 1) in the first duel at neighboring VfL Bochum since 2010 on Saturday thanks to a late goal by Julian Brandt (85th).

The loss of points in the "Derby at B1" threw BVB back even further without their suspended coach five days after leaving the Champions League in the Bundesliga title fight.

Sebastian Polter (40th) had given the Bundesliga returnees Bochum hope with a penalty kick for the first victory against the overpowering rival since the 2-0 on March 10, 2007.

BVB could not use its superiority for a long time and again revealed weaknesses in defense.

An alleged further goal by Marius Wolf (54th) was revoked after video evidence.

Rose was only Kiebitz at the “substitute derby”: After the yellow-red card because of his outburst in 2: 3 against Bayern Munich, he was forbidden from any contact with the team during the game.

His assistants Alexander Zickler and René Maric stood on the sidelines.

"I have great confidence in the coaching team and in the team that it can work that way, even if it's not optimal," said Rose.

The small VfL, who stepped in for the relegated big neighbor Schalke 04 as a derby opponent, confidently went into the B1 duel after five wins from the last seven games.

“We don't have to make ourselves too small,” said coach Thomas Reis, “sometimes David wins against Goliath.” He was again available to goalkeeper Manuel Riemann after thigh problems.

With three corners in the first four minutes, the Goliath initially demonstrated his strength, but the David fought his way into the game.

Riemann, however, served BVB the lead on a silver platter when he forfeited the ball against Bellingham in his own six-yard box, but Dortmund couldn't take the chance (16.).

The VfL goalkeeper made up for his mistake when he saved a little later after a Bochum ball loss in the build-up against the completely free Bellingham with a strong foot defense (18th).

Suddenly the favorite was dominant again, Bochum came under more and more pressure, Riemann got more work.

His opponent Gregor Kobel had to intervene for the first time after half an hour in a shot by Christopher Antwi-Adjei (29th).

Shortly before the break, the Swiss caused the surprising Bochum lead when he got Antwi-Adjei off his feet in the penalty area, Polter converted confidently.

“We are number one in the pot,” sang the VfL fans.

BVB went into the second half with anger in their stomach.

After a shot by Marco Reus, Erhan Masovic saved on the line (48th).

Then the Dortmund team cheered too early: In the supposed 1: 1 from Wolf, Bellingham was offside - and took Riemann's view.

A little later Danilo Soares saved for VfL on the line (62nd).

Antwi-Adjei (72nd) was close to 2-0 on the other side - then Brandt struck.
