The modern pentathletes must continue to fear for their place at the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 after the scandal at the Summer Games in Tokyo.

Because of the still unclear questions about a replacement for riding as a sub-discipline, the International Olympic Committee did not include the pentathlon in the provisional program of the summer games after next on Thursday.

The world association UIPM must first finalize its proposal for a new partial competition and the entire format, said IOC President Thomas Bach after the deliberations of the Executive Committee.

In addition, UIPM should reduce costs and increase the security of the competitions.

Access to the sport and its appeal for young people and the general public must also be improved, said Bach.

The pentathlon has been under discussion since the events at the Tokyo Games.

The German Annika Schleu, at that time the leader in the intermediate ranking, had not been able to cope with a completely insecure horse that had been assigned to her, and had desperately used a whip and spurs.

This had caused severe criticism.

At the beginning of November, the UIPM initiated a procedure to find a suitable replacement for riding.

The IOC expects a final proposal by the end of 2022 and will then evaluate it.

In Paris 2024, riding is still a pentathlon discipline.

Boxing and weightlifting are also not part of the Olympic program for 2028 for the time being. After various scandals, both world associations must first demonstrate further reforms.

In contrast, skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing are back in Los Angeles.

All three sports debuted in Tokyo and are also part of the program in Paris.
