The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) launches from this Monday until next Sunday a new campaign in which it
will carry out more than 20,000 daily alcohol and / or drug controls in order to intensify vigilance
on the risk involved. the consumption of these substances together with driving. Alcohol remained last year as
the second most concurrent factor in fatal traffic accidents in Spain, being present in 27% of them,
two points more than in 2019 and a percentage only surpassed by distractions.
For this reason, agents of the
Traffic Group of the Civil Guard and local police from town halls of more than 25,000 inhabitants
to whom Traffic has invited to join the campaign will establish throughout this week different checkpoints in all kinds of roads and at any time of the day in order to prevent people who have ingested alcohol or used drugs from circulating on the roads.
Almost half of the drivers deceased
According to the latest report on toxicological findings in fatalities in traffic accidents,
a total of 291 of the 597 drivers who died last year in a traffic accident and underwent autopsy and toxicological analysis (almost 49% of the total) yielded positive results
to alcohol, drugs of abuse and / or psychotropic drugs, three percentage points more than in 2019.
The data show that
alcohol continues to be the substance most consumed by deceased drivers, followed by cocaine, cannabis and psychotropic drugs.
With respect to the data of the last 10 years, a general upward trend in the consumption of all these substances can be seen, especially notable in the case of drugs (7.6 percentage points more).
In addition, last year the number of pedestrians killed by being hit with positive results for alcohol
, drugs and / or psychotropic drugs also increased, alone or in combination with respect to 2019.
A total of 56 of the 136 pedestrians
(41%) who lost the life when hit by a vehicle tested positive.
The only safe rate is 0%
The DGT recalled this Monday that the only safe rate is 0.0% alcohol, since,
even with BAC levels within the legal margins allowed, the risk of causing an accident may increase.
The reform of the Law on Traffic, Circulation of Motor Vehicles and Road Safety approved last Thursday in the Congress of Deputies introduces the 0 rate of alcohol both in blood and in breathed air for underage drivers.
In addition, the DGT insisted on "zero tolerance" with this type of behavior to prevent people who have drunk or ingested any type of drugs
from getting behind the wheel and, in any case, always avoid getting into a vehicle in which the driver is in these conditions.
