Goalkeeper Markus Schubert was absent on Saturday due to illness in the match selection of Vitesse against SC Cambuur, but according to trainer Thomas Letsch that is not the reason that Jeroen Houwen got the chance against the Leeuwarders.

The German trainer chooses Houwen for the time being, because he is not satisfied with Schubert.

"In my opinion, Markus was no longer so fresh. It seemed that he had many things on his mind. That is why I came to this change," Letsch said after Vitesse's 1-6 victory against Omroep Gelderland.

The 23-year-old Schubert came over from Schalke 04 last summer and made a few mistakes at Vitesse.

In addition, he was shown a red card in the Conference League game against Tottenham Hotspur.

Houwen had to replace the German then and previously also goalkeeper against Feyenoord.

"Jeroen has done well," Letsch told ESPN before the game against Cambuur.

The Dutch keeper heard on Friday that he would play in Leeuwarden, while Schubert called in sick after it was clear that he had lost his base place.

Letsch did not want to comment on speculation that Schubert would not be really ill and would especially be disappointed with the loss of his starting place.

"At least it's not like I gave him a weekend off. I would never do that."

'Not the goal to change every match'

It seems that Houwen, who went through the youth academy of Vitesse and has been under contract in Arnhem for years, will also be preferred in the coming matches.

"I'm not talking about long or short term, but of course it's not a goal to change goalkeepers every game," Letsch said.

The duel with Cambuur was still a real test for Houwen.

Vitesse won convincingly, although the only chance for the home team was a bet by Marco Tol.

"As a goalkeeper you are disappointed with every goal against, I want to keep the zero", said Houwen afterwards.

"But I'm glad I was allowed to play. I'm training hard to get the chance."

Next Thursday, Vitesse, with probably Houwen on target, awaits the important last group match in the Conferences League against Mura.

The Arnhemmers still have a chance to hibernate.
