René Hofer, teammate of motocross rider Jeffrey Herlings, has passed away.

The 19-year-old Austrian was killed on Saturday when he fell under an avalanche while skiing.

Hofer was skiing with friends on the Lackenspitze in Austria on Saturday afternoon when disaster struck.

A total of three people died in the avalanche, including Hofer.

The KTM rider was known as a great motocross talent.

He raced in MX2 last season.

That is the class below the MXGP, the class in which Herlings became world champion last month.

At the end of October, Hofer won his first and only GP in Pietramurata, Italy.

Last week, Herlings shared a hotel room with Hofer, the Dutchman wrote on Instagram on Sunday.

"And now you're in heaven. My heart is broken, I feel empty and still can't believe it," said Herlings, who became world champion in MX2 in 2012, 2013 and 2016.

Herlings had a special bond with Hofer.

"You were like a brother to me sometimes. You often asked for advice and we laughed a lot together. I love you, brother."

"It's a tragedy for the KTM family"

The skiing accident in Austria was already big news on Saturday, but it was only announced on Sunday that Hofer is one of the three victims.

Five other skiers survived the avalanche.

Hofer celebrated his holiday after a long season, in which he finished sixth in the World Cup standings.

He was a multiple Austrian Motocross Champion and had been active in MX2 since 2019.

That year Hofer also took part in the Motocross of Nations in Assen and was voted best young rider on the Drenthe circuit.

In total he drove 25 GPs in MX2.

"Rest in peace, little René", his team KTM wrote in a first reaction on Sunday.

"You will always be remembered as the happy boy you were. It is a tragedy for your family, the KTM family and for the entire MXGP family."
