Latvia took, somewhat unexpectedly, the lead against Sweden in the World Cup premiere.

Latvia took advantage of a passive Swedish defense and sent in 1-0 after just over four minutes played.

And Sweden still had a hard time grasping the match picture in the first period.

Sweden could, however, turn to 2-1 before the first period was over after goals by Linus Nordgren and Alexander Galante Carlström.

Early in the second period, Emil Johansson scored a goal on a free kick and thus it was increased to 3-1.

- Nice to score in the first match of the tournament.

It's a bit careless and the ball bounces and far, but the second period is better than the first.

But we have a few more levels, Johansson said after the second period.

Sweden continued to play and take command in the match.

Sweden pulled away further in the third period and won the match 11-1.

Linus Nordgren, two-goal shooter and an assist, was named Sweden's best player in the premiere.
