Last month, Olympic organizers said the coronavirus was the biggest challenge in implementing the Games.

But Chinese Foreign Minister Zhao Lijian is confident the country can handle it.

- China has a lot of experience in fighting covid-19, he says.

During the pandemic, China has suppressed the spread of infection with travel restrictions and rapid shutdowns.

Outbreaks of the delta variant in the country are a recurring problem for the country's health authorities.

- It definitely leads to challenges with preventive measures and controls, says Zhao Lijian.

But Chinese authorities believe that they have the conditions to handle the new omikron variant as well.

- China has done a good job with technical preparations for the omicron variant, says Xu Wenbo, responsible for the Chinese Virus Institute.

Requirements for double vaccination

Thousands of athletes, leaders and journalists from around the world have to go into a so-called closed bubble during the Olympics.

Everyone must be double-vaccinated and only domestic audiences are admitted.

In the last month, 1,644 cases of covid-19 have been registered in China.

At the same time, there have been no deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

According to Chinese health authorities, more than 1.1 billion Chinese are fully vaccinated.
