Since Saturday, Portuguese club Belenenses SAD has been in the news far beyond Portugal, and it would have been fine.

This Monday, the National Institute of Health (Insa) indicated that the 13 cases of Covid-19 identified in footballers of the Lisbon club are probably associated with the new Omicron variant of the coronavirus.

These are the first cases of the new variant detected in Portugal and, according to the public agency, one of the footballers had recently traveled to South Africa.

Decimated, the Belenenses team could not field enough players to compete when receiving Benfica on Saturday in the league.

With only nine elements at kick-off, including a starting goalkeeper in the attacking position, it was down 7-0 when the match was abandoned at the start of the second half, due to a lack of fighters: there were only six players left. Belenenses on the ground.

The holding of this "match of shame" caused a scandal in Portugal.

The latest information from the National Institute of Health will not calm the controversy.
