Argentine soccer star Lionel Messi has been awarded the Ballon d'Or award for the best football player of the year.

It is the 7th highest in history.

Messi was selected as the best soccer player of the year at the awards ceremony held for the first time in two years due to COVID-19.

In a press vote with 180 media participants from around the world, Lewandowski beat Lewandowski in second place.

Messi, who was the top scorer in the Spanish league last season, led Argentina to the Copa America championship in July this year and predicted the award early.

Messi, who received the Ballon d'Or for the first time in 2009, became his seventh and continued his career with the most awards, widening the gap with his rival Ronaldo, who had only won five.
