A big test before a possible application at the 2022 World Cup. The "semi-automated" detection of offside will be tried during the Arab Cup, which opens Tuesday in Qatar, FIFA announced on Monday.

Intended to increase the reliability and speed up the detection of offside, this technology has already been tested "in Germany, Spain and England", but was awaiting its baptism during an entire competition, according to Johannes Holzmüller, head of innovation at FIFA. This will therefore be the case during the Arab Cup, dress rehearsal (in miniature) for the next World Cup, which will take place in six Qatari stadiums until December 18, with 16 teams.

This involves placing “10 to 12 cameras” under the roof of each stadium, to follow the players and help the referees to appreciate two crucial points: the moment when the ball is passed or touched, and the position of each part of the ball. bodies of the players involved in relation to the imaginary offside line.

The data collected will be transmitted almost in real time to the video referee assistance cell (VAR), the final decision always falling to the referee himself, recalls the football body.

Indeed, unlike "technology on the goal line", which determines with certainty the entry of the ball into the cage, offside sanctions cannot be fully automated, underlines the chief referee at within FIFA, the Italian Pierluigi Collina.

The referee remains the last judge

“The decision is taken after analyzing not only the position of the players, but also their involvement in the movement.

The technology - today or tomorrow - can draw a line but the assessment of interference with the game or with an opponent remains in the hands of the referee, ”he explains in a video broadcast by the organization.

If the tests prove to be conclusive, the objective is to introduce this innovation during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar (November 21-December 18), as suggested in October by Arsène Wenger, the director of football development at the FIFA.
