Ole Werner is the new coach of Werder Bremen.

The second division soccer club announced this on Sunday.

The 33-year-old former Holstein Kiel coach signed a contract in Bremen that will run until mid-2023 and will succeed Markus Anfang, who resigned after investigations by the public prosecutor's office because of a suspected forged vaccination certificate.

"Ole is a young, exciting and very good coach whose idea of playing football fits in very well with Werder," said sports director Frank Baumann.

"He worked successfully as head coach in Kiel, knows the second Bundesliga and, as a North German, will quickly find his way around Bremen."

The clarification of the coach question ends a memorable interplay in Bremen after more than a week.

After initially resigning, Danijel Zenkovic was the interim coach on the bench in the 1-1 draw against Schalke.

Its positive CoronaTest ensured that U-19 coach Christian Brand had to step in for the 2-1 defeat in Kiel on Saturday evening.

On his debut against Erzgebirge Aue, Werner will now be the fourth coach in the fourth consecutive Werder game.

The football teacher trained the league competitor Holstein Kiel until September.

In September 2019 he was promoted from the second Holstein team to the coach of the professional squad.

Last season the Kiel team reached third place in the table under Werner and failed in their relegation to the first division at 1. FC Köln.

In the DFB Cup they made it to the semi-finals for the first time and beat Bayern Munich on the way there.

Surprisingly, he then announced his resignation at the beginning of this follow-up season.

St. Pauli is first again

In Bremen, Werner was already a candidate for the sporting reconstruction after relegation to the Bundesliga in the summer. At that time, those responsible for Werder decided on Markus Anfang. Apart from the big fuss in the club, Werner also takes on a difficult sporting task in Bremen. After the 1: 2 in Kiel, Werder is only in tenth place in the table with a thoroughly mediocre record of five wins, five draws and five defeats.

Without coach Timo Schultz, who tested positive for the corona virus, FC St. Pauli recaptured the championship lead from SV Darmstadt 98. Hamburg won the top game at 1. FC Nürnberg 3-2 (2-1). The Millerntor-Elf set the course for victory right from the start. Guido Burgstaller (3rd) and Leart Paqarada (10th) ensured a reassuring 2-0 lead for the Hanseatic League. The club hit back with a brilliant 25-meter shot by Johannes Geis (21st). Adam Dzwigala (64th) increased in the second half for the guests, Manuel Schäffler (72nd) succeeded the second goal. It was the third away win for Hamburg this season, who had mainly collected their points in home games.

Hamburger SV is still in contact with the promotion places. The Hanseatic League remained unbeaten in the twelfth game in a row in the undisputed 3-0 (2-0) against bottom-of-the-table FC Ingolstadt. The team of coach Andre Schubert, however, is losing more and more ground in the fight to stay in class. In front of 19,937 spectators in the Volksparkstadion, Faride Alidou (13th) gave the hosts the lead, Bakery Jatta (39th) increased with a header. With more consistent exploitation of chances, HSV could have led more clearly in the first half. Manuel Wintzheimer (89th) put the finishing touches.

The SC Paderborn had to accept a damper in the promotion race.

In the home game against Hansa Rostock, the Ostwestfalen did not get more than 1: 1 (0: 1) after a straight offensive performance that was too unfocused and thus missed the jump to the relegation place.

There was a premiere on the sidelines.

Paderborn's Lukas Kwasniok, as an unvaccinated person, was the first coach in German professional football with a mask in accordance with the district's Corona ordinance.

Sven Michel (85th, hand penalty) equalized for the SCP, Simon Rhein (27th) had put the promoted player in the lead before the break.

Rostock increased its lead on the relegation places to four points with the point.
