Thanks to Virgil van Dijk's first goal of the season, Liverpool booked a simple home win over Southampton on Saturday: 4-0.

Steven Gerrard once again led Aston Villa to victory and earlier in the day Arsenal were 2-0 too strong for the wealthy Newcastle United at home.

Van Dijk scored Liverpool's fourth goal of the afternoon at Anfield against Southampton.

The defender of Orange scored from a corner kick taken quickly by Trent Alexander-Arnold.

It was Van Dijk's first goal of the season.

The former FC Groningen player's last goal dates back to September last year, when he scored against Leeds United in the first Premier League round of the season.

Liverpool were already on roses halfway through against Southampton thanks to two goals from Diogo Jota and one from Thiago.

The team of manager Jürgen Klopp admits a point as number two to leader Chelsea, which still plays at home against Manchester United on Sunday.

Aston Villa won for the second time in two games under new manager Steven Gerrard.

With substitute Anwar El Ghazi it was 1-2 against Crystal Palace thanks to Matt Targett and John McGinn.

At 0-2, Marc Guehi's goal came far too late to make it exciting.

Villa has moved up to eleventh place.

Arsenal strike relatively late against Newcastle

Arsenal had no less than 75 percent of the ball in the first half, but left several good opportunities unused.

It was not until early in the second half that Bukayo Saka scored the opening goal, who was able to finish after an attack over many pieces.

Ten minutes later, in the 66th minute, the decision was made.

Brazilian substitute Gabriel Martinelli passed Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka from close range: 2-0.

Newcastle, which was recently acquired by a wealthy investment group from Saudi Arabia, has still not won the Premier League this season despite a manager change.

Eddie Howe's team is five points behind the safe seventeenth place.

Arsenal remain in fifth place.

Coach Mikel Arteta has won four of the last five league matches with his team.
