Nani, the former Portuguese national team star, has reached the stage of the refusal of the Orlando City club in the American Professional Football League to activate the option to extend his contract until 2022, and this may end his career.
The 35-year-old Portuguese winger played 3 seasons with Orlando after making his career in Europe with Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United, Turkey's Fenerbahce, Spain's Valencia and Italy's Lazio.
Nani was a mainstay in the Portuguese national team squad for 12 years, scoring 24 goals, and participating in several European Championships and the 2014 World Cup.
Over the course of 3 years with Orlando City, Nani played 77 games, including 64 from the start, scored 28 goals, and assisted 23 others.
In 2021, he scored 10 goals and assisted 8 in 28 matches, of which he played 22 from the start.
"We want to thank Nani for the professionalism he has shown in his Orlando career, and we wish him well for the future," Orlando City president Mark Wolf said.
Nani bid farewell to Orlando fans on social media last night when he wrote: "All good things come to an end. After 3 amazing seasons filled with great moments, new friendships and sporting success, I am leaving Orlando City."
