Kenya dominates the men's and women's titles at the ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon

Today, Kenyans Titus Ekiru and Judith Courier were crowned two elite titles in the third edition of the ADNOC Abu Dhabi Marathon, after a fierce competition between the elite of the world's runners in the exceptional event that was organized by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council and sponsored by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), with the slogan "Run in Abu Dhabi".

The race witnessed the participation of 12,000 competitors according to the specified capacity in 6 main categories, including the individual marathon for a distance of 42.2 km, the double marathon / relay of 42.2 km, and races of 10 km, 5 km, and 2.5 km, in addition to the race for people of determination via bicycles. The participants competed along the track designated for the race, which passed in front of many famous cultural, touristic and historical landmarks of Abu Dhabi, such as the Founder Zayed Memorial, Qasr Al Hosn, and the Heritage Village.

The marathon was launched in front of the ADNOC building on the Abu Dhabi Corniche, and gave the start sign. The race was attended and the winners were crowned by: Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, Managing Director and CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company “ADNOC” and its group of companies, and Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili. Chairman of the Department of Community Development in Abu Dhabi, Eng. Awaidah Murshid Al Marar, Chairman of the Department of Energy in Abu Dhabi, Lieutenant General “M” Mohammed Hilal Surour Al Kaabi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Armed Forces Officers Club and Hotel, and Aref Hamad Al Awani, Secretary General of the Abu Dhabi Sports Council.

The coronation ceremonies witnessed the presentation of prizes to the champions, first, second and third place holders in 6 categories of marathon races, at ADNOC headquarters. All participants in the races were awarded medals of appreciation for their success in completing the races.

Ikiru won the first place in the men's category after passing the marathon distance with a time of 2:06:13.

In the women's category, Kenya's Judith Giptok Kurier took first place with a new personal time of 2:22:30.

In the 10 km race, the Moroccan runner Yasser Al-Shachoui clocked a time of 29:55 to take first place in the men's category, while Moroccan runner Hajiba Hasnaoui topped the women's category with a time of 36:27.

In the hand-bike category for People of Determination, UAE star Ayed Al Ahbabi achieved first place after passing the race distance in 1:35:13.

Dr. Sultan Al Jaber said in a press statement: “This event reveals, every year, an elite group of talents and experiences that contribute to elevating its position and presence as one of the most prominent sporting events at the local and international levels.” He said: “The competitiveness and great performance that we witnessed during the course of the race reflects the extent ADNOC and the Abu Dhabi Sports Council are committed to attracting elite international athletes to this race, which is an example of the positive contributions and efforts made by the company to serve the health and well-being of the community.”

Al Jaber congratulated all the winners, and praised their apparent efforts in presenting a successful event worthy of the level of events organized in the emirate and the country.
