In our podcast “Minute Papillon!

", We go back in time with our series" It was the first time in the history of sport ... ".

An episode related to the France-New Zealand rugby match which takes place on Saturday at the Stade de France.

The event is sizeable since this international test match will be the last confrontation between the two nations before the 2023 World Cup, in France.

In this episode, we look back on the first victory of the XV of France against the formidable All Blacks.

On February 27, 1954, in the middle of the V Nations tournament, the Blues faced the New Zealanders on tour in Europe.

France has never managed to defeat them since 1906, the date of the first meeting which ended in a very large defeat (8-38).

And still, at the time, we did not count the points like today.

The arrival of a new generation, in 1954

More than half a century later, the French defeated the Indian sign with an iron defense and a counterattack attempt by Jean Prat, the captain and playing master of the time. This victory (3-0) marks the beginning of a rather prosperous period for the XV of France. It is a new generation that is emerging. All the explanations of Joris Vincent, rugby historian, can be heard in this podcast, above.
