Four years after his second Grand Slam title at Wimbledon, Garbiñe Muguruza returns to major titles.

The Iberian, back at his best, won the WTA Masters by beating Anna Kontaveit in the final (6-3, 7-5), and became the first Spanish to put her name on the WTA Finals list.

Muguruza will end the year in 3rd place in the world rankings, after three years away from the top 10. Australian Ashleigh Barty (no.1), who gave up the Masters, and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (no.2) eliminated in the group stage, ahead of her.

10th career title

“I'm very happy and relieved because I struggled at the start of the tournament, but then managed to play better.

I have proven to myself that I can be the best, that I can be "the Mistress".

It means a lot to me to win such a big tournament here in Latin America.

Aged 28, Muguruza, who was world No.1 in September 2017, thus ends in the best way a year 2021, during which she also imposed herself in Dubai and Chicago.

This title is the tenth of his career.
