Former England international Steven Gerrard, so far at the head of Glasgow Rangers, has been appointed coach of Aston Villa, announced on Thursday the English Premier League club who sacked Dean Smith last week after a fifth consecutive defeat .
“Aston Villa has a rich history and tradition in English football.
I am immensely proud to become his new head coach ”, reacted Gerrard, seduced by“ the ambitious plans ”of the club in the suburbs of Birmingham.
Gerrard is considered one of the best players in Premier League history.
He has scored 186 goals in 710 games for the Reds, but it will be his first experience coaching at the highest level of English football.

A hell of a first challenge in the Premier League
"The Aston Villa board is delighted to announce the appointment of Steven as coach," announced the club, currently 16th in the English Championship having scored just ten points in eleven games.
Former iconic player of Liverpool and the English selection, Gerrard, 41, has been coaching Glasgow Rangers since 2018.
He led them in 2021 to their first Scottish title in ten years, finishing unbeaten.
Gerrard “made a courageous decision in testing his abilities in the intense and high pressure environment” of the Scottish Championship, “and that caught our attention,” as did “his experience in Europe,” adds Aston Villa in his press release.
