Solskjaer regrets 'big step back' after City loss

Frustrated Manchester United coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said his team had taken a "big step back" with their 2-0 defeat at home to Manchester City in the Premier League derby on Saturday.

United fired one shot at City in the rainy match, which was dominated by City and inflicted their third loss in their last four home games in the league.

Solskjaer said his team lost eight home games in all matches during 2021, the largest number of matches in one year since the defeat in eight games in 1989, to increase the pressure on the Norwegian coach, who is struggling to turn the fortunes of his team.

"Of course it's very disappointing," Solskjaer added. "It's a big step back, it's a way of losing we don't like. When we lose a game against a good team you want to see a better performance from Manchester United than we saw today."

"When we had the ball they put pressure on us really well. We couldn't position ourselves well at the back. So we can't reach the level we need to beat the good clubs."

Solskjaer was criticized after the heavy 5-0 loss to Liverpool in his last league match at home, but the win at Tottenham Hotspur and the draw with Atalanta in Italy in the Champions League hinted at some improvement in performance before City added to the problems of the team.
