• The Italian cycling team had 22 bikes stolen on the sidelines of the track cycling worlds in Roubaix.

  • The bikes, estimated at 400,000 euros, were found in Romania a few days later.

  • Two suspects were arrested on Wednesday in Lille and Lomme.

They will be judged in immediate appearance this Friday.

On Wednesday, two young men were arrested in Lille and Lomme, in the North, suspected of being involved in the theft of the competition bikes of the Italian cycling team, we learned this Friday from the Departmental Directorate of Public Security (DDSP).

According to the DDSP, it was the investigations of the urban security police and the Lille judicial police that led to the arrest of these two men, aged 18 and 19.

AFP specifies that the searches carried out in the homes of the suspects made it possible to find various objects and tools that had been stolen at the same time as the precious bicycles.

The latter were found in Romania just days after the incident and several individuals were arrested on the spot.

Bikes at 400,000 euros left unattended

On the night of October 22-23, the thieves seized the 22 competition, track and road bikes from Italian riders, which were simply stored unattended in a vehicle parked in front of the team hotel, in Marcq-en-Barœul.

The bikes had been transferred to a van which was later found in a garden in Lomme.

The Italian team, which participated in the world track cycling at the Roubaix velodrome, had not been penalized sportingly by this theft since it had finished with the competition.

However, the financial loss was significant, estimated at around 400,000 euros.

The DDSP told AFP that the two suspects arrested on Wednesday were to be tried in immediate appearance this Friday before the Lille Criminal Court.
