That Chile's men's national team is established on the football field is nothing new.

Something that you may have missed, however, is the fact that Chile's women's national team has broken several barriers, and taken the step into women's finest rooms.

"La Roja" with Djurgården's Daniela Zamora in the lead went to the World Cup finals in France for the first time in 2019. Previously, they had failed to qualify in 1991, 1999 and 2011 by the smallest possible margin.

In addition, they qualified for their first Olympic Games, in Tokyo.

But the conditions have not always been as good as they are today.

- Everything changes.

Before, we lived in schools with beds in the classrooms instead of hotel rooms.

But everything changes.

We get good support from the union and we are currently working with the best team around us, says Zamora.

"I started playing when I was 16"

Not everyone has the opportunity to start playing sports at a young age.

Daniela Zamora can recognize herself in that - for her, it resulted in the outer midfielder starting to play later than many other professional players.

- I started playing when I was 16-17 years old.

It's too old to be a football player, but we did not have clubs that worked with women's football.

The golden generation has paved the way for young talent.

And for girls growing up in Chile now, the situation is different.

- When I go to Chile, I see many children playing football, we did not.

I think the new generation will be better than us, especially their shape, she says.

The choice fell on Sweden

In 2009, Daniela Zamora made her first international appearance.

But it took a while before she tested her wings abroad.

When it was time for the first foreign contract, the choice fell on Damallsvenskan, and Djurgården.

- It is a good league with a lot of history.

I think it was a step in the right direction for my career, she concludes.
