• Balance 26% of those who died in 2020 on the road in a car or van, did not wear a belt

  • Línea Directa 600,000 Spanish drivers are addicted to looking at their 'smartphone'

Eight out of 10 series on Netflix, HBO and Amazon Prime Video

- the top three entertainment platforms today -

contain a traffic violation or reckless driving behavior. From the first episode.

So the youngest and those who are in the process of getting permission, look the other way. Because there are many: Spaniards spend four and a half hours a day in front of TV, more than any other European, and 60% consume it in

streaming

.

The overwhelming infringement data on the screen comes from

an audit by Rivekids, a manufacturer specialized in road safety.

After viewing 82 productions,

including the latest premieres, he concludes that most are due to

not wearing the seat belt (61% of the cases).

More often in the rear seats.

Thrown like elephants

It is a

conduct punishable by a 200 euro fine and the loss of three points of the license in the case of the motorist.

Although that is not the worst: not wearing that security element increases the probability of dying in an accident by 50%.

And in the case of the occupants of the rear seats, with the addition that, apart from killing themselves, they can end the lives of those traveling in front:

in a frontal collision at only 60 km / h, they are thrown forward as if they will weigh 56 times more.

This means that

a 75-kilogram person will hit like an elephant weighing more than four tons.

That said, in 2020, 26% of those who died in a road traffic accident aboard a passenger car or van were not wearing a seatbelt.

What a typical family sees

Beyond the non-use of this device,

the study has identified 17 other highly recurrent and serious risk behaviors.

Among others, getting

lost behind the wheel (the leading cause of fatal accidents);

wrong crossing or walking incorrectly on the road (in the case of pedestrians);

bring your feet placed on the dashboard;

children who travel without the corresponding seat;

misplacing the headrest;

people who travel in the open box of a 'pick up' or reckless driving with vulnerable users such

as cyclists are among them.

The study focused on the

series that a family of three, adults between 40 and 45 years old, and a 13-year-old son would watch.

Police scenes, fantasy scenes, with classic cars or chase were left out to focus "on everyday situations of our time.

Productions that took place indoors were not considered either.

"Dangerous behaviors that are shown repeatedly cannot be considered film licenses,

since they are constant and have a bad influence on the behavior of users, especially the youngest, who are looking for role models," says

José Lagunar, CEO from Rivekids

and an expert in road safety. On the contrary, "the projection of suitable models and compliance with driving regulations could constitute a fundamental example for the population that exponentially consumes television series" adds

José Quintana, a clinical psychologist.

The solution, says Lagunar, could be "

the incorporation of a road safety consultant into the filming, in the same way that these productions take care of even the smallest technical detail

and do not skimp on resources.

The University of Seville will give continuity

In the case of

Amazon Prime Video, it would be needed by the 22 series that were audited.

In all of them (

Town, Bosh, Charon or Disappeared

) some infraction appears.

In addition, in the only ones in which the rear occupants are wearing a seatbelt - in the case of

Perfect Strangers

and

Modern Love

- the center passenger is a girl who should be wearing a seat.

The bulk of the viewing corresponded to

Netflix: 44 series with 79% of them with punishable behaviors.

For example, in

The Squid Game

or in

Elite

. At the other extreme, the most respectful is Sisyphus.

Of the 16 productions (

Euphoria, Sucession, Sex in New York or Vota Juan

) analyzed by HBO, 68% violated

traffic

regulations

in one way or another. And only in

Big Bang Theory they

respected the use of the belt in the later seats.

And

the film does not end here

.

As a result of the Rivekids report,

the Faculty of Educational Sciences of Seville will

carry out

a study to investigate the possible cause-effect relationship

between bad behaviors in road safety transmitted by our favorite series and daily habits.

Furthermore, in the past, the DGT took action on similar matters.

In 2011, he denounced the promotional poster for the movie

Larry Crowne

in which Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts were riding on a scooter without a helmet.

The production company, Tripictures, was fined 30,000 euros.
