Beach handball, born in Italy in 1990, remains a confidential sport.

But he had been talked about far from the sand in July, following the sanction imposed on the Norwegian team, which had refused to play with the bikini then compulsory during the European championships.

The International Handball Federation (IHF) changed its regulations at the beginning of October: exit the bikini, but "the players must wear short and tight shorts", now indicate the texts.

Their male counterparts are not subject to the same requirements since they can wear shorts that reach "ten centimeters above the kneecap" provided they are "not too loose".

For the upper body, on the other hand, the IHF requires the same for both sexes: “fitted tank tops”.

A question that goes beyond handball

The clothing now legal for the women is almost identical to that worn by the Norwegian players against Spain this summer, during the meeting for the bronze medal of the Euro.

The disciplinary commission of the European Federation (EHF) had condemned the Nordic selection to a fine of 1,500 euros and triggered the indignation of Norwegian sports circles and commentators, who had called for a change of the rules.

The question of clothing has agitated beach sports circles for years, where players consider bikini degrading or impractical.

Beach volleyball players are no longer required to wear it since 2012.
