Today, Sunday, the Egyptian weightlifter Tarek Wahdan, the world champion in Paralympic weightlifting, died at the age of 23, after he was infected with the new Corona virus.

And the Egyptian newspaper, “Akhbar Al-Youm”, said that Wahdan was infected with Corona 5 days ago, and his health deteriorated until he passed away this morning, Sunday.

Meanwhile, Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper quoted the head of the Paralympic Committee, Hayat Khattab, as saying that "Wahdan was with the national team in the training camp at the Olympic Center."

She added, "The young man in his twenties was exposed to a health problem a few days ago, after which he was transferred to a hospital in Cairo, and he died there this morning."

The Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sports, Ashraf Sobhi, mourned the death of the Egyptian player, saying in a statement, "I extend my sincere condolences and sympathy to the player's family and the Egyptian sports family on the death of the Paralympic champion, praying to God Almighty to have mercy on him."

Wahdan, born in 1998, is the first Egyptian athlete with special needs to win gold at the World Weightlifting Championships, in Mexico in 2017.

He also won two gold medals at the African Weightlifting Championships held in Algeria in 2018.

As of Saturday evening, Egypt had recorded a total of 330,084 cases of coronavirus, including 18,592 deaths, and 277,623 recoveries.
