A series about Maradona reveals new secrets.. It starts showing today

The makers of a new drama series based on the life story of the late Argentine football legend Diego Maradona promised to reveal secrets from his turbulent life and his tenure on the field, and has already sparked controversy in his hometown.

The series, which starts showing on Friday on the Amazon Prime platform after Maradona's death in November 2020 due to a heart attack, tells the story of his rise from a humble environment in the outskirts of Buenos Aires to become a global star.

The series, called "Maradona: A Mubarak's Dream", combines archival footage and dramatic scenes about his life in ten episodes, lasting approximately one hour.

Four different actors portray Maradona at different stages of his life, and others play the roles of former players, coaches, agents and family members.

"Would he have liked the show?" Nicholas Goldschmidt, one of the actors who plays Maradona, told Reuters in an interview. I hope with all my heart that the answer is yes.”

Maradona approved the script before his death, which raises speculation about the presence of surprises in some of the details.

The series begins in an exciting way, as Maradona appears at the age of 40 in an overweight beach and has difficulty breathing and is about to be transferred to a hospital after an overdose of cocaine, and his agent, Guillermo Coppola, tries to hide it from the international media.

Everyone knows very well the rise of Maradona during his years of success with the Italian team Napoli and Boca Juniors, and his heroic level with Argentina when winning the 1986 World Cup.

But his failures cannot be ignored, including his battles with drugs and obesity, and many controversial situations that accompanied him wherever he went.

"I think a lot of things are not known yet and we will reveal them because it is a series that deals with private and intimate moments," said one of the actors, Jean-Pierre Noir, who plays Coppola.

The episodes were filmed in Argentina, Spain, Italy, Uruguay and Mexico, and have already sparked controversy in his country, where he is considered a popular hero and the best player in history.

His ex-wife, Claudia Biavani, went to court to demand that some of the scenes be removed and said she would wait to see the final version before deciding whether to take legal action.

Mercedes Moran, who plays Maradona's mother in the series, said that when the audience watched the episodes, their fears would be dispelled.

"I think there is something about Diego - some feelings or points of light - some of his best things and so we tried to celebrate his story," she added.
