Tunisian club president sentenced to 28 years in prison

A Tunisian court has issued sentences to imprison the former president of Club Africain for 28 years, with immediate effect, due to his involvement in checks cases, according to what a judicial official said yesterday.

Abd al-Salam al-Younissi is being investigated on suspicion of involvement in financial corruption during his presidency of the African club between 2018 and 2021, a period during which the club experienced a stifling financial crisis that caused sanctions against him from the International Federation of Football Associations (FIFA).

Ariana court spokeswoman Fatima Boukataya told the private radio station Shams FM, "The court has examined six cases of checks related to Al-Younesi, and he was sentenced to five years in prison in five cases and three years in another case."

The verdicts were issued in the absence of Al-Younissi, who did not attend the court session, but they bear the color of urgent enforcement, according to the spokeswoman.
