In the debate about the controversial FIFA plans for a World Cup every two years, there will be an extraordinary meeting of the member associations on December 20th.

World Football Association President Gianni Infantino confirmed this date at a press conference after the FIFA Council meeting on Wednesday.

“I am convinced that we can work out something that makes sense and that everyone can live with.

We have to find a common denominator, ”said Infantino.

According to Infantino, it is still open whether there will be further deliberations or a vote that day.

Previously, the conflict over the new game calendar had come to a head.

According to information from the German Press Agency, more than a dozen associations are considering ending their membership in FIFA as the last option and leaving the world association.

The AP news agency reported about it first.

On Tuesday, Infantino promoted the reform of the international men's game calendar from 2024 to numerous European association heads - and met with vehement opposition.

"There are or have been heated discussions, the exchange is conducted with tough conditions," admitted the 51-year-old.

A possible two-year world championship is currently being discussed controversially.

Aleksander Ceferin, President of the European Football Union UEFA, has already threatened a boycott from Europe.

The Continental Association of South America also categorically rejects this.

A FIFA technical advisory group headed by Director Arsène Wenger had proposed hosting the World Cup every two years, and the rhythm of continental tournaments such as the European Championship would be shortened.

He trusts "that we will be able to present a joint solution on December 20," confirmed Infantino and admitted: "What this joint position will ultimately look like is in the stars."
