The United States and Mexico took a new step towards the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in the night from Thursday to Friday (Dutch time).
Both countries recorded an important win in the qualifying series.
The US was 2-1 too strong for Costa Rica in its own country.
Thanks to Keysher Fuller, the visitors still took the lead in the first half, but the US still won thanks to a goal by former Ajax player Sergiño Dest and an own goal by Leonel Moreira.
Mexico retained the lead in the North American qualifying series thanks to a 0-2 win over El Salvador.
Former PSV and AZ player Héctor Moreno opened the score and Raúl Jiménez decided the game deep in injury time.
El Salvador and Mexico both ended the game with ten men.
Mario Jacobo (El Salvador) received a direct red card just after the break and Mexican Néstor Araújo was sent off with two yellow cards halfway through the second half.
There was also a victory for Canada and Jamaica.
Canada was far too strong for Panama 4-1 and Jamaica defeated Honduras 0-2.
The numbers one, two and three of the North American qualifying series qualify directly for the World Cup in Qatar.
The number four still plays the play-offs.
