The 32-year-old Northern Irishman now made his sixth straight Ryder Cup and was emotional in the interviews afterwards.

McIlroy lost his three Parm matches before ending up winning his single against Xander Schauffele in vain.

- I have been extremely disappointed that I have not contributed more to the team, but I am glad that I took a point today.

It has been a tough week, he says.

"There is no greater privilege"

McIlroy had to gather to talk in the middle of the disappointment.

- The more I play this competition, the more I realize that it is the best there is in golf, without a doubt.

I love being a part of it and already longing to do it more times.

- There is no greater privilege than to be a part of one of these teams and I have had to do it six times.

These have been my best experiences in my career.

I have never really cried or become emotional about what I have done individually, says the four-time major winner and former world setter.

McIlroy was one of many Europeans who did not reach the desired level in the attempt to defend the Ryder Cup dent.
